Turn down the lights

Jul 02, 2022

Our electricity bill takes a huge chunk out of our paycheck. Especially with rising oil prices and global turmoil. You want to take care of your family and are looking into ways to reduce your electricity bill. Not only for your wallet, but you also want to contribute to a better climate that can be passed a little bit healthier to your children and their children.

You have no idea where you could start with reducing that electricity bill and just landed on this page.

Check that electricity

First thing to do is do an audit of your electricity usage in your home. Because you first have to know the culprits, before you can start reducing the wasteful energy leaks.

Check your appliances

Some appliances use electricity, even though you are not using them. If you see a (red) light on one of your appliances you can surely count on that appliance using electricity. So pull the plug when you are not using your laptop or television. Switch box covers that you can turn off are also handy to help you reduce that electricity.

Also have a look at your current household appliances. How old are they and are they still doing what they are supposed to do? If a household appliance needs to be replaced, look for one that has a lower energy usage. They might be a little bit more expensive, but overtime the lower energy usage will be more sustainable and will lower your monthly electricity bill payment.

And why not think of alternative ways of doing your household cleaning? Occasionally use a broom instead of your vacuum cleaner or in summer you can give your dryer a break and dry your clothes outside on a clothesline with old fashioned clothespins.

Turn down those lights.

Maybe you can remember your mother yelling at you when you were a kid that you had to turn down those lights when you left your room… Well actually that is solid advice, turn down the lights when you are not in that room. Also replacing your lamps with LED lights, helps reducing your electricity bill.

Alternative energy sources

If your concern is the climate and worry about more than the costs of the energy that you use from your electricity provider, you might want to think about alternative energy sources. You could ask your energy provider if they sell “green energy” Energy that is gained from a natural source, like water, wind or the sun. That could work out for you to have a better conscience, but doesn’t help to reduce your monthly electricity payments.

How to reduce your bills? Think about building your own sustainable  energy source!

If you want to be less dependent on big energy providers and want to become as self-sustainable as possible , this might be the solution for you!

Nature provides in so many ways, so If you live next to a stream or small river why not look into the options of have a small watermill? In ancient times that was one way of getting that electricity?

Wind is also something to look at. Some companies are specialized in small home wind turbines. The costs are still relatively high, but in time, hopefully, the price will come down.

The Sun is also an excellent source. Solar panels are getting more common and many companies can install those solar panels on your roof. That will come at a price though. But if you have two right hands, there is a way to DIY a solar unit and have a full proof power source.

Keep your lights burning

If you have done all you could to reduce your electricity usage and want to be less dependent on the energy grid, there is a way to build your own solar source with less the costs of the regular solar industry.
